My husband and I have been trying, struggling, to let the babies have absolutely no screen time before they are two. There have been many studies telling us of how beneficial it is but I am finding that this is far more challenging than I originally thought. Especially with my new found obsession with the T.V. show Once Upon a Time. But T.V. is not even the most challenging part about no screen time, my computer is. For you see, I am desperately trying to become a childrens book writer (keyword is trying) which means my computer is is constantly out and being used around the babies. To a baby a computer has little to no difference to a television and so when they see me staring at it all day in concentration for my next childrens book manuscript they begin to think that the computer is the most fascinating thing in the whole world.
However, this is not my only dilemma, television, though it plays a smaller role, is definitely giving me some troubles. Because as much as I love my sweet babies and as much as I love to play with them all day everyday you slowly begin to loose sense of the English language when you only have to use it in the few short hours in the day that the husband is actually home. You begin to yearn for the sounds of another humans voice, you create imaginary friends thinking it cute because you're using your imagination to play with your babies...but really its just another sign that you may just be losing it. Then you hear it, voices coming from the television telling you of the marvelous stories it holds within its screen. They tell you how you have become friends with its characters and how they can keep you company and sane while you play with your babies, how you can just listen while they play. And you listen. And soon you're beating yourself up because you broke your screen time rule, your son is crawling towards the television, staring at the fascinating characters on the magical T.V. screen, and so you turn it off. But soon enough you hear the voices again, more persistent now and thus go through the motions.
I have, however, found a remedy of sorts that keep the televisions tempting voices at bay at least for a short while, music. Babies love music, it's even good for them! At last I can hear the oh so beautiful words of the English language again, and not have to feel guilty about it! Not only that but it makes play so much for entertaining for them and me. We dance and sway, whoop and play and have oh so much fun in the process. If any of you, like me, hear the oh so tempting calls of the T.V. screen then vanquish its calls with music. At least in this way you can rest assured that you won't forget the English language and you will actually be able to talk to your husband once he gets home. Something I definitely find to be useful.
Do any of you have such struggles in your daily life, what would be your best suggestion?
