After getting into a heated debate with some online stranger who claimed reading was not an important skill for children it got me to wondering. I started looking up as many statistics as possible. According to this read aloud website only 48% of children are read to daily, what an incredibly low number! Because of this more than one in three children arrive at kindergarten without the skills necessary for lifetime learning. How sad! And yet there are still people who believe that reading on a regular basis is useless, that you only truly need to know enough to get you through the work day. Balderdash!
All of this got me thinking, could these statistics really be true? One of my favorite things is to go to the library and pick out new books to read to my twins. Surely, others find the joy in this too. Well, that is why I have set up this poll. I want to know what you think! Is reading important? How often do you read for your kids? If you had to guess, how often should you be reading to your kids?
