Last month I wrote about the ten best things about having twins, well this week I am going to do the opposite. Lets face it, having twins is hard! And while the good far outways the bad, having twins is just plain harder than one baby.
.) They are born knowing how to fight. I swear my babies just came out of me stealing toys from on another or pushing the other down. How is this possible you ask? Twins.
.) Difficult pregnancy. Compared to most my pregnancy was not bad at all, though it was still harder than any singleton pregnancy. While my pregnancy was not as bad as some twin mothers, I have read numerous accounts of babies born too early, hospitalized bed rest, and so much more that makes our pregnancies much harder and even scarier than your normal singleton pregnancy.
.) Travel. Its impossible....just don't do it.
.) Twins team up on you. Twins learn how to work together pretty quickly it seems. Just the other day both were trying to get into some pebbles to eat them in the backyard. I of course moved them both and informed them that eating pebbles is not a part of a proper diet, however, this did not stop them. Before I knew it one was running into the side yard and was going towards the street forcing me to chase after them, when I got back the other was crying because they decided to try to take a bite out of a rock and hurt their teeth. If only I could be in two places at once...
.) Mess. I just walked down stairs and there are eggs on the windows, some kind of blue foam on the walls, both babies have gotten their diapers off and are running around peeing on the floor.....initiate crying...
.) Being fair and equal. I laugh at people who think that you can have twins for the price of one. Try for the price of double. I can't fit both twins in one diaper thank you very much! I most certainly can't give only one of them a meal! This goes the same for toys. If both twins have a toy that is their favorite you better be buying a second one or your in for a month of none stop fighting and while I am all for teaching kids to share 17 month olds just don't grasp this concept...
.) There are some activities you just can't do with twins....unless your willing to pay extra. A few months ago I was reading about a fun swim class for small babies that is offered in my area. I was so excited, I love swimming! I called right away to get the details on pricings but the instructor immediately told me it would be impossible with twins unless someone came with me...but my husband works on the days they have class...so the only other alternative was for one on one classes with the instructor so she could take a baby...this cost 100 dollars extra for each baby. Ya...no.
.) Lack of sleep. Once again I am rather blessed and don't really have the right to complain about this one compared to other twin mothers, but I have been there. Nights on end where your baby just won't sleep and you can't figure out why. And guess what you still have to get up with them in the morning when your husband leaves for work. Have daddy get up with them in the night your say? As much as I would love that my babies want something to eat and daddy just doesn't have the equipment...
.) Individuality. When you have a singleton this is rather easy. You don't even really think about it. They like trucks, okay, cool. But with twins it is a little harder. Some twins get incredibly attached to each other to the point where they can't be themselves without their twin with them. This makes decisions like weather you should separate them in school or not very difficult. Or maybe your twins are the opposite and they both like completely separate things. This still has its challenges...such as birthday parties. Yes, I am in fact having a dark ninja pink princess tiara birthday party. What of it?
.) Not having enough arms. Okay it's naptime, got both twins in each arm. Doing awesome! Crap, Kaylee needs her bunny for her nap...and Evan wants his blankie...okay got this...Get half way upstairs and realize Kaylee also wants her blankie. Okay I can do this. But Evan wants his Evan doll. Now Kaylee wants her Kaylee doll. You know what screw this, your both going down for a nap without anything!!! I wish...
